SHOOK ONES
facetious folly feat (2006/REVELATION)
HARDCORE. SHOOK ONES hail from Bellingham and play fast-forward hearts-on-sleeves hardcore-punk in the tradition of LIFETIME, KID DYNAMITE and THE BACKUP OLAN - to also mention a more recent representative of that sound. SHOOK ONES do what they do best - they step on the gas and kick out 11 snotty anthems. The raw production highlights the band’s punk roots and delivers the same unpolished sound that worked so well for the band on past releases. Think of a more in-your-face and stripped-down rendition of NONE MORE BLACK and you’re pretty close to what this is all about. And while “facetious folly feat” has plenty of good times to offer. No doubt, any fan of rampant punk-infused hardcore with witty lyrics will fall for this album.
SHOOK ONES
sixteen (2005/ENDWELL)
HARDCORE. SHOOK ONES proves that hardcore doesn't have to be about getting dumped and doesn't have to be about getting stabbed in the back. Taking the best of both worlds - along with some cues from predecessors like NONE MORE BLACK, KID DYNAMITE/LIFETIME and leaving the bullshit behind, SHOOK ONES offers both innovation and familiarity at the same time. Theirs is a recipe that includes uncompromising speeds mixed with an array of guitar riffs that seem to continuously evolve. This, combined with a healthy dose of hooks, conspire to get all up in the listener's face in the nicest way possible. None of the 12 song hits 3min., so they just pound 'em out, make their mark, and call it a day.
SHOOT TO KILL
altar of pigs (2009/FREQUENCY DELETED)
HARDCORE. Western Massachusetts quartet SHOOT TO KILL bust out 8 metallic hardcore tracks all deeply rooted in the Cleveland school of music with nods to classic like INTEGRITY, RINGWORM and common bands like PULLING TEETH and CURSED present throughout, all with political and social overtones in the lyrics.
SHOUT OUT LOUDS, THE
our ill wills (2007/HALDERN POP)
POP/INDIE-ROCK. THE SHOUT LOUDS are back with the follow up to their critically acclaimed release "howl howl gaff gaff". "our ill wills" is a bit of a departure. This album manages to maintain the SHOUT OUT LOUD sound while not retreading old material. Shimmery songs and heartfelt lyrics that maintain there pop appeal while maturing along the way. "our ill wills" most likely will not get the praise as "howl howl gaff gaff", but it certainly deserves it. They could just as easily made a follow up of catchy pop tunes that can't lose and in some ways they have but you have to respect a band that isn't afraid to move forward as artists and travel new roads.
SHOWDOWN, THE
back breaker (2008/TOOTH AND NAIL)
METALCORE. "back breaker" is their 3rd full-length CD, and their best. THE SHODOWN plays metalcore mixed with southern-metal, and have added more thrash to this CD. The songs are heavier and more intense than on their last album, but still have plenty of good melodies and hooks. There are no traces of modern-rock here, it's all metal! Thick riffs and breakdowns combined with thrash and groovy southern-metal influences give THE SHOWDOWN a distinctive sound.
SHRINEBUILDER
s/t (2009/NEUROT)
PSYCHEDELLIC/DOOM-ROCK. SHRINEBUILDER is the meeting of musical monoliths: Scott "Wino" Weinrich of SAINT VITUS, THE OBSESSED, ect., Al Cisneros of OM and SLEEP, Dale Crover of MELVINS and Scott Kelly of NEUROSIS, with all 4 sharing duties on vocals. SHRINEBUILDER delivers on the promise of a riff-roaring power--psychedelic explosion, but it also reveals a sonic sum unanticipated by its different parts.
SHUTDOWN
against all odds (2011/VICTORY)
SXE-HARDCORE. With an emphasis on old-school values and new-school musical sensibility, SHUTDOWN is poised to take over where bands like GORILLA BISCUITS left off. And with a legend like Jimmy Gestapo (Murphy's Law) manning the production duties on "against all odds", SHUTDOWN is ready to be recognized worldwide as the leaders of hardcore's new breed. This record also contains 3 tracks from their older releases, alongside 11, detailing the evolution of SHUTDOWN, and of hardcore as a whole.
