Scrape the walls (2006/ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES)
PUNK-ROCK. After three long years, here's the latest record from Oakland punk-fuzz-rock-?!? faves THE FLESHIES! "Scrape The Walls" is a spirited 17-song record that successfully molests punk rock in a similar manner to how Sparks unwholesomely molested glitter rock, the MELVINS mauled rock, or the BUTTHOLE SURFERS maimed music in general. (Speaking of Sparks, this album includes a delightful cover of "Happy Hunting Ground" with Jello Biafra on guest vocals!) "Scrape the Walls" bounces everywhere from somewhat sunny-dispositioned pseudo anthems to sludgy, stoner rock-esque castings, all glazed with Fleshies' inimitable sense of fuck-you humor. But honestly, no 200-word summary can neatly tie up the disorderly strands of ideas and musical chaos that is THE FLESHIES and we wouldn't want to do them such disservice so we will just say Scrape the Walls is exactly the kind of record AT should be releasing and leave it at that!

GARAGE-ROCK. THE FLESHTONES have been grinding out garage-rock before garage-rock was even called garage-rock. While chart hits and magazine covers weren't to be their fate; a reputation as the hardest working, most sincere rock band on the planet was cultivated in the process. The result of that distinction is their new album "brooklyn sound solution" featuring the legendary Lenny Kaye. FLIES AROUND IT

POST-HARDCORE. Here is the debut 3-song release from Asheville's FLIES AROUND IT. While this is definitely throwback emotional hardcore, this is not a clone. Sure, this could've pretty easily fit along with many bands on the early-mid '90s Gravity Records roster, but something with sort of raw, fierce emotion doesn't seem to pop up anymore. Think if UNWOUND in 1991 were listening to lots of HÜSKER DÜ's "zen arcade" and getting heavily into guitar pedal experimentation. Half of this group are either current or past members of KAKISTROPHY. This is also the only recorded evidence of ex-drummer Steve Ritt (BRAINWORMS).

It's not that often when a band’s notoriety comes from their humor more than the music they produce. This time, the FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS strive for the same goal. The band consists of 2 witty New Zealanders that take comical music to a whole new level. PUNK-ROCK. Originally released in 1986 as a DoLP of live material culled from 1980-85. The sound quality and playing are both a grimy, distorted mess, which suits the band just fine. Always alternating between endearing and abrasive FLIPPER left no room for the middle ground of "like". The album title is a shot at John Lydon (Minor Threat) and his alleged plagiarism of FLIPPER's artwork for his own PIL and it proves that the band was never opposed to alienating its audience, no matter how sanctified. Harsh, art-rock classics from one of San Francisco's most important post-hippy era bands.

PUNK-ROCK. Originally released in 1987, "sex bomb baby" is actually a collection of FLIPPER material dated no later than 1982, comprised of singles, b-sides and compilation tracks. The single version of "sex bomb" is an all out classic, a frenetic, yelping punk answer to "louie, louie" and the rest is no slouch either, outrageous, harsh, punk from San Francisco's finest. Back in print on 180gr vinyl for the 1st time in years.
