JAY REATARD
singles 06-07 (2008/IN THE RED)
GARAGE-PUNK. Former front guy for THE REATARDS and LOST SOUNDS and current solo sensation, the man is nothing if not prolific. After recording his debut solo album, REATARD released a slew of 7"s on labels across the globe; all were pressed in limited quantities and now fetch serious coin on Ebay. "Singles 06-07" includes 17 tracks collected here in one neat package. Quantity brings out a quality you can't get any other way. The product of a manic disorder, the mania in this music is contagious.
JEALOUS / ROMANCE, THE
split (2007/ANCHOR AWEIGH)
HARDCORE. JEALOUS are a 5 piece sxe-hardcore outfit from Northampton, UK. The band features ex-members of SWORN IN! Musically, JEALOUS are fast, thrashy and extremely dark, combining obvious rhythm with short sections of manic chaos, playing songs in the same vein as bands such as AMERICAN NIGHTMARE, CARRY ON and the SWING KIDS with strong influences from the more experimental side of the genre, namely CONVERGE. The ROMANCE from Sweden on the flipside play dark, metallic hardcore etween CURSED, HIS HERO IS GONE with hints of such wide artists as MASTODON, NEUROSIS and INTERPOL. This is a great split by two new upcoming bands. Available in colored vinyl!
JEALOUS SOUND, THE
a gentle reminder (2013/RISE)
INDIE/EMO-ROCK. It's been a while since you've heard from THE JEALOUS SOUND, but Blair Shehan (KNAPSACK) and crew, which includes Nate Mendel from SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE and FOO FIGHTERS on bass for select tracks, return with a strong, catchy emo-rock record that harkens back to the heyday of the genre when bands like JIMMY EAT WORLD and THE APPLESEED CAST were kings. This deluxe reissue of the 2012 comeback full-length from THE JEALOUS SOUND features 6 bonus tracks on the double-LP (4 on the CD) version that comes housed in a gatefold cover. Vinyl version includes CD.
JEAN MILLS SOCIETY TORCH
Start tomorrow (2008/FIRESTARTER)
HARDCORE-PUNK. This record has been 3 years in the making, but it's been well worth the wait. From the outer reaches of rural Maryland comes the state's best kept secret. Boredom, hate for the ingorance all around you, and a spiteful sense of humor combine to create some pretty good hardcore. Throw in a love of Japanese punk and you've got something really special. Like a perfect blend of JELLYROLL ROCKHEADS, EXCLAIM, NECROS and the MEATMAN. It's fast, it's furious, it's fun. The band features past and present members of THE SPARK, DEEP SLEEP, THE JONS etc..
JEFFREY LEWIS
the last time i did acid i went insane (2012/DON GIOVANI)
SINGER/SONGWRITER. JEFFREY LEWIS classic debut album, originally released in 2002 on Rough Trade. In addition to being on vinyl for the 1st time the record will come with a download card which in addition to the album includes four live never before released bonus tracks from 2001.
JELLO BIAFRA & GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
audacity of hype (2009/ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES)
PUNK-ROCK. Though many of JELLO BIAFRA's “collaborations” would have been called solo albums by other artists, this is his 1st full-time working band since DEAD KENNEDYS, and it shows. Also on board are current and ex-members of VICTIMS FAMILY, FAITH NO MORE etc.. The band's twin guitar attack retains some of the space-punk overtones and spy-music-on-meth chaos of DEAD KENNEDYS while adding a healthy dose of Detroit style proto-punk, flavored with industrial excursions into metal percussion.
JELLO BIAFRA & GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
enhanced methods of questioning (2011/ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES)
PUNK-ROCK. JELLO BIAFRA & GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE are at it again! Hot on the heels of their debut full-length the group roars back with 5 unreleased rippers. The band’s twin guitar attack retains some of the space-punk overtones of the DEAD KENNEDYS, while adding a healthy dose of Detroit-style proto-punk. This is Biafra's 1st full-time band since the DEAD KENNEDYS broke up in 1986, and the depth and breadth of his musical chops and lyrical triumphs are on full display on these ferocious tracks. The digital download card include a transmogrified 18min. cover of a DEVIANTS' classic.
JELLO BIAFRA & GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
shock-u-py (2012/ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES)
PUNK-ROCK. Election fever is here and even more of a circus than usual, so who better to jump in and stir up trouble than JELLO BIAFRA & GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE? Their new release "shock-u-py" is the perfect soundtrack for the fall political melee. The 10" is the 1st recording to feature Andrew Weiss on bass (WEEN, ROLLINS BAND, BUTTHOLE SURFERS) and the powerhouse drums of Paul Della Pelle (RUIN, HELLIOS GREED etc.). The rest of the GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE are the familiar faces. Vinyl includes a digital download card with bonus track!
JELLO BIAFRA & GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
white people and the damage done (2013/ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES)
PUNK-ROCK. Former DEAD KENNEDYS vocalist delivers his 1st concept album since "frankenchrist". The 2nd full-length fromJELLO BIAFRA & GUANTANAMO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE picks up where last fall's "shock--py" left off. No pop-punk here, just Jello and crew taking punk fire in unexplored directions, with wall-of-sound, in-your-face production. Eye-catching Winston Smith cover-art. Vinyl version includes a digital download card.
JENIFEREVER
iris (2010/DENOVALI)
POST-ROCK. It may be just a 4 track release but don’t whatever you do think this is a quick-spin-while-getting-ready-to-go-out job. Clocking in at no less than 37min. JENIFEREVER are a band all-too-fluent in the art of drawing out a song and building upon it wonderfully expressive SIGUR ROS-esque art-scapes. As you begin to absorb such delicate waves of sound you start to view their music more as works of art. Without getting too poetic about it, "iris" is simply a beautiful record that you’ll find caressing your hangover time and time again. Nicely packed and 180gr vinyl!
JENIFEREVER
silesia (2011/MONOTREME)
POST-ROCK. The Uppsala, Sweden four-piece have previously been compared to some truly otherworldly outfits, bands with the ability to paint a world around the listener. But every second of "silesia" is tied to place and time, bound by reality and borne by experience. It's less about escape, more confronting the unexpected trials that send one's life into undulation. Whether "silesia" breaks through the invisible divide between underground and mainstream is out of the band's hands. But there are moments of snappy accessibility that will surely tick relevant radio boxes, given the chance. "silesia" is an album of similar changes and contrasts, of life and death, and just as fascinating as the forever-changing nature of what's outside your window.
JENS LEKMAN
Night falls over... (2007/SECRETLY CANADIAN)
SINGER / SONGWRITER. Like a modern day Chet Baker, Jens loves to sing about heartache. This is his first album in over three years, and Kortedala refers to a neighborhood in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden - "a depressing suburban hell". It also refers to a vague musical pop sound with hints of tropicalia that has been coming out of Gothenburg's clubs the last few years. "Night Falls Over Kortedala" features many previously unreleased live favorites and guest vocals from label-mate Frida Hyvonen and EL PIERO DEL MAR.
JEREMY JAY
dream diary (2011/K)
INDIE-POP. On JEREMY JAY's "dream diary" the sway of the heart is in overdrive with the freedom of youth and bright horizons. These are the major themes of "dream diary". Recorded with the powerful yet lithe trio, they kept the studio alive with the majestic pop perfection that unfolds as "dream diary" draws you into its spell. Synth driven, and a bit moodier than his past work, this album will take you by the hand and walk with you towards a beautiful sunset, and then walk right past it.
JEREMY JAY
slow dance (2009/K)
INDIE-POP. The stripped-down, synth- and guitar indie-pop on this oddly spellbinding 2nd album from Los Angeles singer-songwriter Jeremy Jay could be the CARS minus the dreams of chart glory and bloated studio budget. The Human-Flock of Seaguls-OMD synths are prevalent throughout, but the never seem to be too over the top. Jay tempers his '80s infatuation with '50s style swoon, Angelo Badalamenti and even a little spaghetti western. "slow dance" easily avoids the sophomore slump curse, in fact this record easily bettering his previous one.
JESSE MALIN & THE ST. MARKS SOCIAL
love it to life (2010/SIDE ONE DUMMY)
PUNK 'N' ROLL. JESSE MALIN is no stranger to the New York City punk scene, 1st fronting hardcore band HEART TTACK in the early '80s then glam-punks D GENERATION a decade later. In 2010, after a few solo records, Jesse is back with a new band and just as much rock 'n' roll gusto as ever before. Vinyl version includes digital download.
