JUANITA Y LOS FESOS
pesadilla adulta (2011/MUNSTER)
POST-PUNK. JUANITA Y LOS FESOS have recorded and ambitious, infectious new album which, while retaining their characteristic new-wave and post-punk sound, represents a daring pop evolution for the band. Reminiscent at times of DEVO, THE CURE and early '80s Spanish punk-bands, "pesadilla adulta" constantly takes edgy and catchy turns led by Juanita's irresistible voice.
If thine enemy hunger (2006/RELAPSE)
INDIE/POST-ROCK. The infamous JUCIFER has returned with its long-awaited new full-length If Thine Enemy Hunger. ...Hunger, the Athens, GA power -duo's first proper album in almost four years, serves up an unforgettable collection of the melodic, bombastic rock that is their calling card. The dreamy, seductive vocals of the gorgeous Amber Valentine melt into monolithic walls of guitar and pounding drums (courtesy of wildman Edgar Livengood) to form the most infectious heavy rock you will ever hear. With a sound as big as the hooks it's 15 tracks carry, If Thine Enemy Hunger is a total eargasm and vibrant return to form by one of the US's most unique rock bands.
L'autrichienne (2008/ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES/RELAPSE)
INDIE/POST-ROCK. "L'autrichienne", the follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut "If thine enemy hunger", is the most ambitious JUCIFER record to date. Amber Valentine's distinctive voice varies from harsh, banshee screams to softly moaned intonations against a raw palette that varies in terms of tempo and volume but never wavers in emotive intensity. JUCIFER reinvents metallic shoegazing on "L'autrichienne". You'll feel your bones crunching under chords of sickening despair, and the most melodic moments will have you tearfully soaring with hope and glimmering beauty.
JUCIFER / J.A.C.K.
split (2009/YAB YUM)
POST-ROCK. Equally liable to produce inscrutable noise/grind, barbaric sludge, fist-pumping rock propelled by ass-shaking drum grooves, and gorgeous wisps backed by a single naked banjo or a multi-tracked orchestra (performed by its 2 members), JUCIFER is encompassing the best of the world of music for themselves. The members of J.A.C.K. met in music school and that pedigree is evident within every song, morphing and building in beautiful destruction. The band evokes everything from blues and garage, to '70s riff-heavy guitar rock.
dictator (2010/REGURGITATED SEMEN)
HARDCORE. After brilliant 1st 7" here's the next smasher on a one-sided 7", JUDAS thrashing out some of the amazing hardcore overall violent and dark atmosphere. The 5 songs are rather short, burning out in an explosive mixture between power-violence and sludgecore in the vein of CROSSED OUT, EYEHATEGOD. Art by Jordan Darby of Dry-Rot. Comes with silkscreened handmade cover!
JUDAS FACTOR, THE
ballads in blue china (1999/REVELATION)
POST-HARDCORE. This album starts off with brutal riffs and raw edge vocals. Then mid-way through, it goes to soft indy rockish music and vocal stylings. Then back to the hard stuff, yet this whole full-length has a different tone and sound than chugga chugga of other folk's hardcore. THE JUDAS FACTOR is a band you'll want to hear, with lyrics you need to read. You might find a personal anthem here.
what it meant: the complete discography (2012/REVELATION)
SXE-HARDCORE. To most fans of hardcore, JUDGE is a band that needs no introduction. Their debut was released with much fanfare, selling faster than it could be kept in press. The "bringin’ it down" full-length took the band to an entirely different level. The meshing of metal-edged guitar riffs and fast, energetic hardcore without treading too far into the realm of crossover raised the bar for every band that dared to pick up their guitars. It was official- JUDGE was a full-fledged outbreak. And almost as suddenly as it had started, it was over. The complete discography compiles the entire recorded output of JUDGE. DoLP comes with gatefold-cover and includes a digital download card.
80 million barrels (2011/RUIN NATION)
PUNK-ROCK. Being around for a mere of 20 years JUGGLING JUGULARS are by far the longest serving Finish punk band to date. This slap of vinyl contains 9 new tracks of catchy, melodic anarcho-punk that is riddled with dual fe/male vocals and tunes and melodies that merge into a wall of full throttle and straight forward rolling guitars riffs and heavy drumming. This record is a one-time pressing of 600 copies in total.
POWER-VIOLENCE. Northern Virginia/Richmond quartet JUICE TYME play no nonsense, fast hardcore in the vein of INFEST, CROSSED OUT, SPAZZ and DROP DEAD, paying homage to anything 625, Slap-A-Ham or Deep Six with a manic madman at the front, a blast machine in back and tight, catchy and crunchy riffs at the nucleus.
JUKE JOINT PIMPS, THE
boogie the house down (2008/VOODOO RHYTHM)
GARAGE/BLUES-ROCK. T-Man and Mighty Mike live in Cologne in Germany. They had been playing Memphis and Chicago blues in the rivalling bands THE SILVERSTONE and LITTLE ROGER & THE HOUSEROCKERS. A two-man band with drums, harmonica, guitar and a voice that can shatter glass - pretty much all you really need to play good music! They sound like ELMORE JAMES, HOWLIN' WOLF and REVEREND CHARLIE JACKSON. Within very little time THE JUKE JOINT PIMPS have evolved into a unique act. They sound “black” enough to cater to a traditional blues audience while being so wild, loud and raw that the punk rockers and garage freaks dig them just as much. And they’re really truckloads of fun to watch! Their 1st album on Voodoo Rhythm Records compiles tracks from 2 different recording sessions (1st demo and live recordings).
and the wooden stars (2013/JAGJAGUWAR)
POST/FOLK-ROCK. Available for the 1st time on vinyl, "julie doiron and the wooden stars" is DOIRON's most critically acclaimed album, going so far as to win the 2000 Juno Award - the Canadian equivalent to the Grammy - for best independently released album of the year. Combining elements of rock, folk and jazz ala JONI MITCHELL's early '70s work, "julie doiron and the wooden stars" somehow translated the coldness of the Canadian winter into one of the warmest and most tender records to be produced in the Eastern province in years. Vinyl includes a digital download card.
i can wonder what you did.. (2009/JAGJAGUWAR)
POST/FOLK-ROCK. Ex-ERIC'S TRIP member and Mt. Eerie associate Julie Doiron returns with another album's worth of artful, lo-fi songwriting, following on from 2007's "woke myself up". Doiron's stark and honest songwriting is bolstered by a band made up by her various bandmates: bassist Rick from ERIC'S TRIP and Fred Squire who last worked with Doiron on Mt. Eerie's superb "lost wisdom" album. The blend of Doiron's very open and rather gentle delivery works beautifully alongside the more rocking elements, lending a most welcome helping of electrified muck to the mix. Despite the rock-ish tendencies "i can wonder.." still offers up an intimate slice of Doiron's life, and it's another album to be treasured.
vv (2010/SHARK MEN)
HARDCORE. Just as onJULITH KRISHUN previous record, the futuristic artwork is both welcoming and a warning that JULITH KRISHUN plays a toxic mix of screamy hardcore. The band is still influenced by CONVERGE, BOTCH and their likes, but is moving away from the rocking side a bit on "vv". Instead, JULITH KRISHUN brings you a chaotic and distorted sound crammed in short songs. They are better in the fast, hectic stuff and luckily this is still incorporated in the later songs of the album. Comes with nice gatefold cover and in colored vinyl!
JUMP OFF A BUILDING
bird watching in new zealand (2007/LENGUA ARMADA)
HARDCORE-PUNK. "bird watching in new zealand" is the debut 7" from San Francisco's JUMP OFF A BUILDING. These 6 tracks pay homage to hardcore-punk from the early '80s, taking influence from early Los Angeles skate-core and D.C. legends and adding vital elements of originality and good songwriting. Sounds like early ZERO BOYS mixed up with BLACK FLAG or other D.C. bands. Has an off beat thing going on in a VOID sort of way. This band has been blowing minds away. Buy now or cry later.
