AUSTIN LUCAS
somebody loves you (2009/SUBURBAN HOME)
SINGER/SONGWRITER. Recorded in December 2008 by his father, Bob Lucas, "somebody loves you" finds Lucas backed by his father, Chris Westhoff, and Todd Beene (Lucero), and accompanied by his sister, Chloe Manor. The new material accelerates Lucas' growth as a songwriter, continuing to expand upon the storytelling and instrumentation. Beyond his accomplished picking, Lucas' voice defines his music, reaching from the intimacy of a lover to the fervor of a sinner begging atonement. Stylistically and thematically, the lyrics of "somebody loves you" ring more timeless and universal than those of Lucas' past work. Ultimately, this is the album that will close the book on AUSTIN LUCAS' tenure as the best-kept secret of the punk underground and bring him to the attention of alt-country and Americana fans everywhere.
AUSTIN LUCAS
the command cold (2008/HOMETOWN CARAVAN)
SINGER/SONGWRITER. Mixing old time traditional american music along with contemporary indie influences, AUSTIN LUCAS' album "the common cold" combines the best from multipal generations of american roots music. Following in what is quite possibly the most important of traditions in all forms of roots music, AUSTIN's family is heard throughout this recording. His father lends the banjo and fiddle throughout the album and his sister voice is heard on the haunting irish murder ballad. With driven picking and beautiful vocal harmonies, this album should be a breath of fresh air for fans of depression era country as well as those of lo-fi acoustic indie music. Vinyl version includes a digital download card.
AUSTRASIAN GOAT, THE
paved intentions (2012/VENDETTA)
DOOM-METAL. Finally a new full-length by the AUSTRASIAN GOAT. This time the solo mastermind is completly satisfied with the recordings for the 1st time. THE AUSTRASIAN GOAT always create a special dark mood with his black-metal inspired doom tracks. An atmosphere that only this guy is able to put into music. On "paved intentions" he slows down a lot and takes a step back from metal. The new songs have a touch of bands like SWANS or HORSEBACK, or even the NEUROSIS sideprojects from Scott Kelly and Steve von Till. This double album has more atmosphere than his previous releases - it will take you on a trip down to your deepest emotions.
AUSTRASIAN GOAT, THE / HOLLOW SUNSHINE
split (2011/VENDETTA)
DOOM-METAL/DRONE. On this nice platter two solo artists teamed up. HOLLOW SUNSHINE deliver a pummeling, industrial sewer while THE AUSTRASIAN GOAT goes rather eclectic. The b-side features a wild blackened shoegaze meets industrial psych piece by way of a collaboration between both. Limited edition of 300 items, handnumbered with silk-screened covers.
AUTARKEIA
s/t (2011/IFB)
SCREAMO-HARDCORE. Hailing from sunny FLORIDA, AUTARKEIA crushes through 8 tracks of dark, moody, and epic emo. Made up of members of JIYUNA and MERKIT, both sides shine through, combining gorgeous building and spine tingling emo with crushing, often distorted bass that made this record almost too heavy to cut the lacquers right. These tracks explore everything from calm to driving to gigantic pounding intensity, all fronted by female vocals ranging from venomous, pained fury to haunting ethereal beauty. The packaging is made from recycled, inside out, screen printed record jackets to reduce resource consumption, and comes with an poster/lyrics insert.
AUTHOR & PUNISHER
ursus americanus (2013/SEVENTH RULE)
DOOM/INDUISTRIAL-METAL. AUTHOR & PUNISHER is an industrial doom-metal, one-man band utilizing primarily custom designed and fabricated machines and speakers. The devices draw heavily on aspects of industrial automation and robotics, focusing on the emotion of interaction with machine. By means of his own inventions, Shone explores earth-shattering doom metal that has plenty in common with GODFLESH due to its evident industrial inclinations. Even more than his debut album, "ursus americanus" is ridden with downright disturbing soundscapes which, along with drums and heavily distorted vocals, make for truly oppressive, stifling atmosphere.
AUTHORITIES
soundtrack for trouble (2012/GET HIP)
PUNK-ROCK. This is a official reissue of the seminal 1982 7" by California's AUTHORITIES. Features the Killed By Death classics "radiationmasturbation", "i hate cops", "achtung" and "shot in the head" plus 2 never before released recordings of "between the thighs" and "lSD".
AUTISTIC YOUTH
idle minds (2010/SABOTAGE/DIRTNAP)
PUNK-ROCK. This is the long awaited 2nd album from the hardworking PDX youngsters, following up their classic "landmine beach" full-length. Driving, melodic punk-rock with dark, swirling undercurrents. Sounding like a cross between Portland, Southern-California and Copenhagen, you could compare this to bands like THE OBSERVERS, RED DONS, NO HOPE FOR THE KIDS, ARTICLES OF FAITH etc.. Vinyl version includes a MP3 download card.
AUTISTIC YOUTH
landmine beach (2008/SABOTAGE)
PUNK-ROCK. Hailing from Portland, Oregon these 4 youngsters are influenced heavily by classic '80s bands like the WIPERS or ADOLESCENTS but also more recent outifts like THE OBSERVERS or THE EXPLODING HEARTS. On this full-length they deliver 11 songs of anthemic and heartfelt punk-rock that will make you dance dance dance! LP includes a MP3 download card.
AUTONOMY
the art of work in the age of digital reproduction (2012/DIRT CULT)
POST(ANARCHO-PUNK. Dark and atomospheric anarcho-punk from Illinois. This full-length sounds like JOY DIVISION, WARSAW, PROLETARIAT and THE MOB all at the same time. If you like current bands like ICE AGE or BELLICOSE MINDS, this might be the next thing you will be singing along to. Great demo and a band to watch out for. Honestly, this is one of the best Dirt Cult releases ever.
AUXES
mehr! mehr! mehr! (2012/LOVITT)
POST-PUNK. In 2012 the AUXES' 3rd full-length, "more! more! more!", was released as a 13-song album, and on Lovitt Records as a 4-song 7" called "mehr! mehr! mehr!", which includes a download of all 13 songs. Musically, the new songs have a stripped-down, aggressive punk-rock sound - fitting for a city where cop cars are routinely set on fire. Citing rough comparisons to WIPERS, HOT SNAKES and pre-ROLLINS-era BLACK FLAG.
AUXES
sunshine (2008/LOVITT)
INDIE/POST-ROCK. Chapel Hill's AUXES throw their hat into the ring with "sunshine", an album that builds on the town's penchant for driving, emotion-propelled indie-rock. The hat being thrown unquestionably belongs to Dave Laney, guitarist and creative force behind MILEMARKER and CHALLENGER. After playing with a cross-section of the town's most creative musicians (incl. members of FING FANG FOOM, BELLAFEA etc.), Laney decided to go the solo path. "sunshine", the band's 1st full-length, features Laney playing virtually all the instruments with power and precision. Vinyl version includes a digital download card.
AVAIL
dixie (2008/SUBURBAN HOME/JADE TREE)
PUNK-ROCK. The classic 1994 album from Richmond's punk-rock legends is back in print and better than ever. The original 12 tracks have been re-mastered and beefed up by the addition of 11 bonus tracks (compiled from the "attempt to regress" 7" and the "live at the kings head inn" 10", new liner notes, and loads of rare photos). "dixie" is the rallying cry that put AVAIL on the map, belted out in emotive tales of the struggle of everyday Southern life and backed by unfathomably huge hooks and an unbridled rage.
AVALANCHE
among beasts (2013/PER KORO)
HARDCORE/DOOM/SLUDGE. AVALANCHE from Vienna/Austria giving nods to the horned one. They play heavy hardcore with a strong tendency towards stoner- and doom-metal. Instead of attempting to intimidate with epic scope or bleak mood, as does by most doom/sludge bands, these miscreants basically cut to the chase and get right in the listener's face. The 5 newly remastered tracks (3 of them are from their "among beasts" 2010 demo) are concise blasts of mostly thudding mid-tempo hardcore rage, riding easy on primal SABBATH riff-worship. The stoner riffs could work your fillings out of your teeth - the ruptured throat sounds pissed - the bass is feedback soaked and gives a solid groove and the drums sound crisp like a nuclear explosion not very far away from your living room. Some parts are slow but not glacial and the riffs are without ever hinting at bounciness. The SABBATH-ian lineage is clear, but AVALANCHE owe just as much to the frothy-mouthed intensity of SLEEP, EYEHATEGOD, OKKULTOKRATI, PENTAGRAM and their ilk. The atmosphere here is generally one of extreme hostility, and when these guys kick up the tempo the resultant is far more hardcore than anything else. Quite simply it is a heavy journey that should be tracked down by anyone into crushing, heavy music - a drug-infused jam - and you’ll be pulled right in! The one-sided, limited and handnumbered (300) LP comes with a screenprinted b-side and cover, black innersleeve and includes a digital download card. [PK #060]
AVENGER OF BLOOD
death brigade (2007/HEAVY ARTILLERY)
THRASH-METAL. Continuing the heavy metal onslaught, Heavy Artillery bring you the latest installment of brutality in the form of "death brigade" by Las Vegas metal mercenaries AVENGER OF BLOOD. Influenced by first-wave German and American thrash-metal bands such as KREATOR, SODOM, DESTRUCTION, SLAYER and EXODUS, the band had quickly turned into a formidable force, gaining notoriety with the release of their 1st self-titled demo that same year. Adorned with killer cover artwork by legendary MOTÖRHEAD cover artist Joe Petagno, "death brigade" draws first blood with 11 punishing tracks on the limited edition vinyl version.
