POLICE & THIEVES
amor y guerra (2011/SALAD DAYS/YOUNGBLOOD)
EMOCORE. Washington, DC's POLICE & THIEVES carry on the tradition of melodic hardcore that DC put on the map. These 13 songs offer incredibly energetic and well played hardcore in the vein of VERBAL ASSAULT or DaAG NASTY. Colored vinyl includes a digital download card.
POLICE & THIEVES
fracturing (2011/YOUNGBLOOD)
EMOCORE. Washington, DC's POLICE & THIEVES return with 7 songs of fast, melodic hardcore combining influences from their hometown with elements of post-punk, having just as much in common with DAG NASTY, MARGINAL MAN and VERBAL ASSAULT as well as later-era SEAWEED. Limited edition of 400 colored copies. Vinyl includes a MP3 download card.
POLICE & THIEVES / REMISSION
split (2011/AMENDMENT)
HARDCORE/EMOCORE. For POLICE & THIEVES, this is their 1st official recording since their "amor y guerra" 7" in 2008. The songs on the split maintain their mid-tempo, melodic, '80s DC sound from their previous releases, while adding faster parts to the songs, giving them a more dynamic and powerful feel. For South America's REMISSION, they recorded these 2 new songs shortly after their "winds of promise" 7". Their style has been influenced by VERBAL ASSAULT and DAG NASTY but they continue to put their own stamp of melodic hardcore over this classic style.
POLICE BASTARD / WAR//PLAGUE
split (2011/PROFANE EXISTENCE)
CRUST-PUNK. Profane Existence has been given the opportunity to release this split album by 2 bands made up of weathered veterans from both sides of the Atlantic: POLICE BASTARD hailing Birmingham, UK (formed by ex-DOOM members) and play a combination of classic peace-punk with thrashier crust-punk influences and include crustified versions of RUDIMENTARY PENI and MOB classics with their contribution. WAR//PLAGUE hail from Minneapolis (ex-PROVOKED, CALLOUSED, PONTIUS PILATE etc.) and play a deeply moody style of crust punk with rhythmatic tribal undertones. Both bands have previous releases under their belts, but this is their 1st. appearance on Profane Existence.
POLITE SLEEPER
lake effect (2009/SABOTAGE/EXPECT CANDY)
POST-ROCK. Following 2008’s critically acclaimed "seens" full-length the latest is less a stopgap and more a proper introduction for the Brooklyn trio after spending much of last year abroad. Gone are the banjo and pedal steel interludes, the erratic arrangements; gone are the sad sack lullabies and 2min. strummers. Enter Mellotron drones, three part harmonies and at the core a rhythm section that still drives each narrative with a confidence to say that less is truly more. Somewhere Britt Daniel of SPOON just nodded. The 9 tracks on "lake effect" are equal parts unique and obtuse, poetically indifferent and as plain as the Midwestern roots of the members themselves. LP includes a MP3 download card.
PONYS, THE
Laced with romance (2004/IN THE RED)
Alles klar?
PONYS, THE
turn the lights out (2007/MATADOR)
INDIE-ROCK. Chicago's PONYS follow their two critically acclaimed albums with their Matador debut. A classic twin-guitar rock band fronted by impassioned vocals, with songwriting ranging from psych jams to pounding rockers to twisted singer/songwriter material, evoking influences from TELEVISION, DREAM SYNDICATE and THE JESUS AND THE MARY CHAIN. "turn the lights out" is denser, noisier, and more fed up than its predecessors, and sounds bigger to boot. The complex interplay between the guitars and the reverb-drenched vox and keys emerges more effectively than ever before. A dirty-sounding mess of post-punk choppiness and timeless teenage snarling.
POP. 1280
thirteen songs (2012/BLIND PROPHET)
POST-PUNK. "thirteen steps" is the newest release from New York's POP. 1280. It picks up right where last year's "the grid" left off, and is guaranteed to satisfy those waiting patiently for their LP (on Sacred Bones). For the uninitiated, these New York creeps take the sonic palate of bands like COP SHOOT COP, SWANS and put it through a cyber-punk blender; somehow in the process managing to make catchy songs out of dissonant noise, synths, and drums. It's paranoid, potent, and packs a healthy dose of swagger. Limited to 500 handnumbered copies.
POPPETS
s/t (2009/P. TRASH)
GARAGE-PUNK. On a cold morning the POPPETS took out their caffeine addiction and their old drum computer pal to an empty warehouse where they met up with a cheap gang of guitars, a good-for-nothing bunch of synthesizers and a sock wearing, noise addicted microphone and together they wrung out these 8 minimalistic and animalistic lo-fi gems that were captuired immediately on a 4-track tape recorder. Their 1st longer effort to date clocks in at 14min. and is filled to the brim with damaged and beat-up pop that shakes and twitches in every corner. None of the involved had to suffer mental or physical damage and will soon be operational for other releases. This edition comes with a silk-screened cover.
PORN AND MERZBOW
and the devil makes three (2008/TRUTH CULT)
NOISE/AVATGARDE/AMBIENT. Another laidback compendium of R&B ballads and showtunes from MERZBOW and pals, featuring guest appearances from Sarah Brightman and Joanna Lumley. The Japanese din merchant teams up with power trio PORN (comprising MELVINS man Dale Crover on drums, bassist Billy Anderson and guitarist Tim Moss). As was the case with his BORIS collaborations, MERZBOW accompanied by a rhythm section takes some of the bite out of what he does but adds another dimension. All artwork is by Seldon Hunt.
PORTERS, THE
Anywhere but home.. (2007/KNOCK OUT)
FOLK-PUNK. THE PORTERS aren't just a side project of the mastermind of germans punk and oi! band 4 PROMILLE anymore. THE PORTERS are four lads and one chick firmly rooted in the heart of Germany's Ruhrgebiet and Rhineland, united by their deep love for traditional Irish music. An obvious contrast, creating a versatility that shows in the sound of the band. Happy and playful irish-folk melodies give way to the full monty of pure punk-rock energy, tin whistle and accordion provide the background for ballads full of aspiration, banjo and mandolin change to languorously weeping guitars. Fans of FLOGGING MOLLY, DROPKCICK MURPHYS or REAL MCKENZIES should check this out!
PORTERS, THE
rum, bum, violina (2012/CARGO)
FOLK-PUNK. Traditional folkmusic gives way to pure punk-rock energy - these are THE PORTERS firmly rooted in the region of Düsseldorf, Germany. The 4 lads and a lady pull no punches between playful melodies played on the violin and distorted guitars. Piano, hammond organ and mandolin provide the background for ballads or rock like mad. Anyway, THE PORTERS raise their glasses high to create their own sound sometimes evocating pictures of smokefilled pubs or shabby punk-rock clubs. Enjoy folk-punk with a difference.
PORTUGAL THE MAN
american ghetto (2010/DEFIANCE)
POST/INDIE-ROCK. PORTUGAL THE MAN specializes in navigating the waters between pop, motown, indie and utter mass-appeal with a laid back ease typical of musicians twice their age. With a command of their craft rarely seen today, PORTUGAL THE MAN has released an album every year since 2006. The most recent is "american ghetto", a gift for the fans in the form of a psychedelic album packaged in a petal fold jacket with metallic numbering, and featuring black and white photography by lead singer and composer John Baldwin Gourley. Heavy 180gr vinyl includes a digital download card.
PORTUGAL THE MAN
the majestic majesty (2012/EQUAL VISION)
POST/INDIE-ROCK. "the majestic majesty" is the acoustic companion to the critically acclaimed PORTUGAL THE MAN "the satanic satanist". Previously available only as part of a deluxe digital version, the stripped back renditions are perfectly suited for the vinyl format and eagerly anticipated by collectors.
PORTUGAL THE MAN
waiter: you vulturest (2006/DEFIANCE)
POST/INDIE-ROCK. Prepare to bear witness to the aurora borealis of electronic sound that is PORTUGAL THE MAN. Hailing from the arctic wastelands of Alaska and the mountainy mountains of Oregon, these glacial hike hardened warriors craft a musical tundra unlike that heard in the sonic botulism of everyday life. With this arsenal of sound they trek forward not unlike the future writing members of the starship enterprise. Having met Jesus in upstate New York in the month of June of 1969 this quartet now knows future. Now lives the future. Now is the future. Where the mule learned his name and was forced to become the goat.
